History

Historical Context

In 1992, the FBI dismantled the “Port of Los Angeles cargo-theft ring,” seizing $2.5 million worth of merchandise. The investigation involved the Los Angeles Police Department, U.S. Customs, and the shipping company Maersk, which reported 1,200 missing containers. Today’s Philadelphia cargo heist mirrors that case, with the Philadelphia Police Department, Port of Philadelphia, and a gray Ford F-150 used to steal 3,000 lb of snow crab. The recurrence underscores the need for tighter security protocols, prompting the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to allocate $15 million for advanced tracking at major ports.
