Historical Context
- In September 1992 the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies opened impeachment proceedings against President Fernando Collor de Mello, citing a corruption scheme uncovered by a parliamentary inquiry. The Federal Senate convicted him on 30 December 1992 by a 76-to-2 vote, barring him from office for eight years and demonstrating the judiciary’s power to curb political leaders; the same mechanisms later reappeared in probes of later politicians.
