Historical Context
  • In November 2020 Apple launched the M1, its first Mac-on-a-chip built on TSMC’s 5 nm process, the third ISA shift after PowerPC-to-Intel (2006) and Intel-to-Apple silicon. The chip featured 16 billion transistors and high efficiency, spurring competitors to speed up their designs. Apple introduced the M6 on August 25 2026 using TSMC’s 2 nm node, now powering the 14-inch MacBook Pro and iMac.
