Core Event: Joint Trial Over Drugging, Rape and Online Advertising

Philip Young, 50, a former Conservative councillor from Swindon, has pleaded guilty to voyeurism, rape, administering a substance with intent, penetration, sexual assault and publishing an obscene article. The offences were committed against his former wife, Joanne Young, who has waived her right to anonymity.

Four men are on trial at Winchester Crown Court for sexual offences alleged to have been committed jointly with Young:

  • Norman Macksoni, 48, of Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire – one count of rape.
  • Richard Wilkins, 62, of Toothill, Swindon – one count of rape and one count of assault by penetration.
  • Connor Sanderson-Doyle, 32, of Swindon – sexual assault by penetration and sexual touching.
  • Mohammed Hassan, 38, of Swindon – sexual touching.

All four defendants have entered not-guilty pleas. The adverts featured photographs of Joanne Young tied to a bed and blindfolded.

Background & Context

Joanne Young said her marriage was “fairly normal” until 2023, when she awoke blindfolded and restrained while an unknown man performed a sexual act. She told police a “nightcap” shared with her husband had drugged her, leaving her unaware of what occurred.

Prosecution evidence shows Young administered sedative drugs to his wife over an approximately 18-month period, from April 2023 to August 2024. Police were first alerted when a parcel containing a sedative drug mailed from India was intercepted; Young claimed ignorance of its contents.

Electronic devices seized from Young’s home in July 2023 contained images and videos of Joanne Young filmed while blindfolded and restrained. The material indicates Young staged multiple encounters with men recruited through online adverts.

Official Statements & Responses

Prosecutor Sarah Jones KC framed the case as a test of whether it is ever reasonable to have sex with an unknown woman without first confirming consent. She added:

> “He was never once considering whether she gave permission – only whether her husband did.”

The prosecution does not allege any of the defendants administered drugs or were present when drugs were given.

05

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

The case against Mohammed Hassan relies on Joanne Young’s testimony and text messages, as no video of the alleged February 2023 touching incident exists. Police have not disclosed whether any of the four defendants recorded the assaults.

06

What’s Next

The trial continues. The jury must decide whether each defendant genuinely believed Joanne Young consented, whether that belief was reasonable, and whether reliance on Young’s alleged permission is permissible under the law. No verdict has been reached at the time of reporting.
