Historical Context
- In 2014, Russia’s annexation of Crimea sparked a wave of covert sabotage campaigns across Eastern Europe, notably the sabotage of the Polish oil refinery in Gdansk. Polish security services and the EU’s law-enforcement agency Europol recorded 12 coordinated attacks that caused over €2 million in damages and led to 5 arrests. Today, Romanian DIICOT uncovered a Russia-directed sabotage cell that set fire to the CARFIL arms plant in Brasov, using Belarusian and Ukrainian operatives and encrypted apps. The coordinated extraditions to Germany and Poland echo the 2014 cross-border prosecutions, underscoring NATO’s resolve to deter state-sponsored industrial sabotage.
