Highway 26 Closure After Power-Pole Fire
A fire ignited at the top of a power pole on SW Barnes Road in the Cedar Hills area, prompting Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue to shut both directions of Highway 26 near the 217 exit. The blaze was contained quickly, but damaged the pole and adjacent power lines, creating a safety hazard for the roadway and the nearby MAX light-rail corridor. Highway 26 remained closed through the morning rush and reopened shortly before 10 a.m. on the same day.

Response by Emergency and Utility Services
Portland General Electric (PGE) described the incident as a rare “pole-top fire,” which can occur when dust and other contaminants accumulate on a pole during a prolonged dry period and become damp, allowing electricity to arc and ignite dry wood. PGE crews worked through the night and into the morning to replace the damaged pole and restore service. The utility emphasized that road safety was restored before all electrical repairs were complete, explaining the separate timelines for traffic reopening and power restoration.

Transit and Power Outage Impacts
The fire caused a commercial power outage that affected MAX Blue and Red lines near the Sunset Transit Center. TriMet reported service disruptions and deployed shuttle buses between Beaverton Transit Center and the Galleria/Library stations. At approximately 5:30 a.m., PGE indicated that more than 2,500 customers near Providence St. Vincent Medical Center were without electricity; the figure fell to just over 400 by about 7 a.m. Detour guidance directed westbound drivers to the Sylvan exit for Highway 217 and eastbound drivers to use Highway 217 southbound to Canyon Road before rejoining Highway 26.
