01

Russian Satellite Activity Linked to Saudi Attacks

A private geospatial-intelligence firm, AURORAH Geosignal Intelligence, identified a consistent pattern of Russian reconnaissance satellites orbiting above Saudi strategic sites before and after attacks. The firm tracked 72 Russian satellites out of more than 11,000 in orbit and noted that 11 Cosmos-2600 series satellites concentrated on three pumping stations of the East-West Pipeline in the weeks leading up to the drone strikes. Satellite flybys rose by roughly 50 % during 72-hour windows surrounding the strikes, and a similar increase was observed before a later attack on King Fahd Air Base in Taif that damaged an Italian Eurofighter Typhoon.

02

Background on the Pipeline and Recent Strikes

The 1,200-kilometre (746-mile) East-West Pipeline carries Saudi crude from the eastern Gulf coast across the Najd Plateau to the Red Sea, providing an alternative route amid Iranian attacks on Strait of Hormuz shipping. On the morning of the attacks, multiple drone attacks from Iraq hit three critical pumping stations, temporarily halting oil flow. A week later, projectiles fired by Iranian-backed Houthi forces struck King Fahd Air Base, damaging the Italian aircraft housed there.

03

Key Actors and Intelligence Flow

Nawaf Obaid, founder of AURORAH and former adviser to Saudi officials, said his analysis showed “a 100 % match” between satellite activity and the attacks. Adam Marsh, vice-president of technological solutions at orbital-intelligence firm Leolabs, described the satellite clustering as typical for intelligence collection, noting the lack of regulatory oversight. An anonymous Saudi official briefed on investigations confirmed that Russian satellites aided the targeting of the pipeline and the Taif base. A senior Houthi leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Iranian advisers on the ground used Russian satellite data to generate target lists. Security analyst Mzahem Alsaloum added that advisers provide Iranians with operational information derived from the satellite feeds.

04

Official Saudi Response

Rayed Krimly said Saudi Arabia regularly discusses the matter with both China and Russia and will continue to do so. Russian officials declined to comment when approached for a response.

05

Implications and Assessment

The observed satellite patterns suggest that external intelligence collection is becoming a critical component of the weapon systems employed by Iranian-backed militias. By enabling precise strikes on high-value infrastructure such as the East-West Pipeline and foreign military assets, the satellite support may shift the regional military balance, making intelligence itself a strategic asset in the ongoing conflicts.
