Double Payments Triggered by Calendar Shifts

On Wednesday, October 28, 2026 the Social Security Administration (SSA) will issue the final October round of Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits to beneficiaries whose birth-dates fall between the 21st and 31st of the month. Two days later, on Friday, October 30, 2026, the SSA will disburse the November Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefit early because November 1, 2026 falls on a Sunday. Recipients who receive both Social Security and SSI can therefore see two separate checks arrive within a three-day span. The October 30 payment is not an extra benefit; it is the regular November SSI payment issued on the preceding business day.

02

Background & Context

Social Security benefits are paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of each month, depending on the recipient’s birth-date. For 2026 the schedule is:

  • October 14 – birthdays 1-10
  • October 21 – birthdays 11-20
  • October 28 – birthdays 21-31

Beneficiaries who began receiving benefits before May 1997, as well as those who also receive SSI, follow a separate calendar that typically places Social Security payments on the 3rd of the month and SSI on the 1st.

SSI payments are normally issued on the first day of each month. When that day lands on a weekend or federal holiday, the SSA moves the payment to the preceding business day, as it did for the November 2026 SSI benefit.

The November Social Security schedule is also shifted because Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, 2026; the first November payment moves to Tuesday, November 10, 2026. Subsequent Social Security dates are Wednesday, November 18 and Wednesday, November 25 for the remaining birth-date groups.

A 3.6 % cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will take effect in 2027, raising average monthly benefits for retirees by about $75 and for disabled workers by about $59. SSI payments will see the increase at the end of December 2026, while Social Security payments will reflect it starting in January 2027.
