Global and Asian Ranking Highlights
The 2026 edition of *The World’s 100 Best Museums* placed Bihar Museum at ninth worldwide, making it the highest-ranked institution in Asia. The list, compiled by the travel and cultural platform Worth a Journey, also ranked Mexico City’s Museo Nacional de Antropología first, Spain’s Museo del Prado second, and Denmark’s Louisiana Museum of Modern Art third. Bihar Museum’s position places it ahead of several long-standing Asian museums from Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and Indonesia.
02
Museum Profile and Visitor Experience
Located on Bailey Road in Patna, the museum opened to the public in 2017 after phased construction that began in 2015. Designed by Japanese Pritzker Prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki in partnership with Mumbai-based Opolis Architects, the 13-acre campus blends contemporary architecture with open courtyards and landscaped lawns. Exhibits are arranged chronologically, covering Bihar’s history from the Stone Age through modern times, and include ancient sculptures, coins, manuscripts, archaeological artefacts and regional folk art. A dedicated Children’s Gallery and a short historical film enhance the educational appeal for students and tourists alike.
