U-turn on Collarette Ban for Remembrance Sunday
Queen’s University Belfast announced that the proposed prohibition of Orange Order collarettes (sashes) at its annual Remembrance Sunday ceremony has been withdrawn. The university said it had “listened to feedback” and will allow the regalia to be worn during the service scheduled for Sunday 8 November at the campus war memorial.
02
Background and Guidance
The initial ban was justified by the university on the basis of dress-code guidance from the Royal British Legion, which advises that attire for official marching and standing at remembrance events should follow its rules on medals and orders. The Legion’s handbook specifies that its guidance applies to Legion members attending its own events and does not extend to the general public.

03
Official University Response
A university spokesperson explained that the marching dress code was updated after veterans and serving members of the Armed Forces requested alignment with the Legion’s guidance. Following additional feedback from a broader range of stakeholders, the university recognised the significance of collarettes for some participants and confirmed they may continue to be worn.
04
Political and Student Reactions
DUP MLA Phillip Brett praised the reversal, describing it as a “victory for common sense” and emphasizing that the university should not make members of the Orange Institution feel unwelcome. The club also noted that Orange Society members had previously worn sashes at the ceremony without issue.

Upcoming Service Details
The Remembrance Sunday service will take place at the university’s war memorial in front of the Lanyon Building, with wreath-laying by various societies and clubs. The event will honor the sacrifices of past and present service members, and the university will illuminate the Lanyon Building as part of the observance.
