Historical Context
  • Watergate began on June 17 1972 when operatives tied to President Nixon’s re-election campaign were arrested breaking into the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate complex. The ensuing cover-up forced Nixon’s resignation on August 9 1974 and spurred the 1974 Ethics in Government Act, which now underpins federal probes such as today’s FBI raid on Stephen Cloobeck’s mansion. In total, 69 people were charged in the scandal.
