Historical Context
- The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, launched in March 2003, quickly escalated into a protracted conflict costing roughly $2.4 trillion for U.S. taxpayers. The Department of Defense reported that by 2011, Pentagon contracts for munitions and equipment alone exceeded $400 billion, while Congress allocated $1.2 trillion for reconstruction. Like today’s Iran operation, the Iraq war’s budget surged as the Pentagon attributed billions to expended munitions, lost drones, and extensive airlift support. These historic overruns prompted the Government Accountability Office to demand tighter fiscal oversight, shaping current debates over transparency in U.S. overseas engagements.
