01

Election Stakes for the 2026 Midterms

With less than a week before Election Day, control of both chambers hangs in the balance. In the Senate, Republicans hold a narrow edge—Fox News reports a 53-47 split, while ABC News notes a 53-45 advantage with two independents caucusing with Democrats. Democrats must net four seats to claim a majority; Republicans need to retain at least three contested seats. In the House, Republicans occupy 218 seats (including one independent who generally supports the speaker), giving them a razor-thin majority over Democrats’ 214 seats. A net gain of three seats would hand Democrats the Speakership.

02

Seat Projections and Competitive Races

RealClearPolitics’ poll averages project Democrats winning back the House, while the Senate remains a toss-up. The Cook Political Report lists 198 safe or likely Republican House seats, still short of a majority. In the Senate, projections indicate Republicans may lose a seat in North Carolina as a two-term incumbent retires.

Key competitive Senate contests highlighted by Fox News include:

  • Ohio – former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown vs. appointed Republican Jon Husted.
  • South Carolina – Democrat Annie Andrews vs. appointed Senator Darlene Graham.
  • Mississippi – incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith vs. Democrat Scott Colom.

In the House, notable races feature former astronaut-turned-Senator Mark Kelly campaigning in Maine for Democrat Troy Jackson, and Republican-aligned efforts in Texas to replace retiring Senator John Cornyn.

Election-Monitoring Efforts

Democratic groups and watchdogs are mobilizing a massive presence at polling places, citing fears that President Donald Trump could leverage federal resources. The Democratic National Committee has created a cybersecurity unit staffed by former CIA and FBI officials. Common Cause, the ACLU, and state Democratic parties have trained roughly 10,000 volunteers to observe precincts.

The Justice Department, under the Trump administration, is planning its largest-ever election-monitoring operation, deploying about 1,000 staff nationwide, focusing on high-population areas and jurisdictions with prior issues. Civil Rights Division head Harmeet Dhillon confirmed there is no plan to send ICE agents to polling sites.

The Republican National Committee is fielding “election integrity deputy state directors” in 22 states and recruiting nearly 22,000 poll workers. Both sides warn that the unprecedented scale of monitoring could create confusion at the polls.

Official Statements & Responses

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson emphasized the GOP’s record on the economy: “We are bringing down the cost of living. We are providing more jobs and opportunity for more people. The facts show it and the records show it.” Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries asserted that “The American people are fed up.”

Mark Kelly, campaigning in Maine, expressed confidence: “I actually think the odds are on our side.”

Justice Department spokesperson Kiersten Pels reiterated that DOJ monitors will be unarmed and will not interfere with voting.

05

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

  • Senate composition: Fox News cites a 53-47 Republican advantage; ABC News reports a 53-45 margin with two independents caucusing with Democrats.
  • House majority calculations: Fox News’ Power Rankings suggest Republicans need 50 seats to retain control (counting Vice President JD Vance’s tie-breaking vote), while ABC News describes a 218-215 edge for Republicans on Election Night.

What’s Next

Early voting is already underway in many states. Election Day is slated for early November, when voters will decide whether Democrats can flip the Senate and retake the House, and whether the extensive monitoring efforts will proceed without incident.
