New Hybrid Production Plans
General Motors announced a multi-billion-dollar investment to add hybrid vehicle assembly to its Lansing Delta Township plant in Michigan. The automaker confirmed an additional $1 billion commitment on top of a $1.25 billion upgrade pledged earlier in the year. The funding will partly stem from a restructured Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant originally provided by the U.S. Department of Energy for electric-vehicle (EV) projects. While GM did not name the specific hybrid models, Reuters cited unnamed sources indicating that hybrid versions of the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia will be built at the facility.

Background: From EV Ambitions to Hybrid Focus
The Delta Township plant, which turned 20 this year, was previously slated for EV production alongside a nearby battery factory co-owned with LG Energy Solution. GM later sold its stake in that battery plant and transferred Michigan Strategic Fund tax credits to LG Energy Solution. The company has recorded $11.2 billion in EV-related charges since the second half of 2025, including a $7.4 billion cash impact, of which $4.6 billion was paid in the third quarter of 2026 and another $1 billion is expected in the following quarter. The remaining balance is slated for payment in 2027.

Investment Details and Production Targets
The $1 billion infusion will support tooling, workforce training and supply-chain adjustments needed for hybrid SUV assembly. Senior Vice President of Global Manufacturing Mike Trevorrow highlighted the plant’s existing expertise in three-row gasoline SUVs—currently the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia—and said the investment builds on those strengths while preparing for future customer demand. The plant posted a record output of more than 291,000 vehicles in 2025, the highest annual production in its history.

Official Statements
““We will have hybrids in our portfolio in multiple segments, the key segments we participate in,” — Mary Barra, GM CEO” — Mary Barra, GM CEO
Barra added that hybrids will appear across the “key segments” where GM already competes, and that no additional capital expenditure or engineering effort is required beyond the announced investment.
