01
Escape and Immediate Response
On the night of October 25, 2026, staff at the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville discovered that 28-year-old inmate Jacob Allen Morley was missing. An emergency headcount was initiated and security cameras later showed Morley breaching the perimeter fence while wearing his prison uniform. At approximately 1 a.m. on October 26, footage captured Morley entering a white 2008 Ford F-350 and driving away from Keystone Drive in Lake County. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation added Morley to the state’s Most Wanted list and warned that he should be considered dangerous.
02
Vehicle Theft and Truck Recovery
The stolen Ford F-350 bore Tennessee plate 138 BBQV and was marked “Lindamood Planting Company.” The Hornbeak Fire Department reported seeing the truck at 1:18 a.m., and later sightings placed it in Troy, Tennessee. On the morning of October 27, 2026, TBI located the vehicle abandoned behind a shopping center in Marion, Illinois, roughly 120 miles north of the prison. Police were notified at 11 a.m.; the truck was recovered, but Morley’s whereabouts remain unknown.

03
Background on Conviction
Morley was convicted in February 2025 of first-degree murder for the 2022 killing of co-worker Cody Wayne Birchfield in Carter County. Birchfield’s body was found hidden in a metal box beneath Morley’s home after a missing-person report on February 23, 2022. Morley also received sentences for aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, vandalism and evading arrest.
04
Prison Context and Staffing Issues
Northwest Correctional Complex can house 1,776 male inmates. A 2023 audit revealed a 61 percent vacancy rate for correctional officers, and the facility has faced a series of violent incidents, including a grand-jury indictment in July that named dozens of inmates and staff in multiple assaults and murders. Earlier in October, another inmate, Gregory Redden, escaped from TDOC custody but was recaptured within hours.
05
Public Safety Concerns
Community members expressed alarm over the escape. One close childhood friend of Birchfield, Diana Reid, said she fears Morley could harm others while on the run.
