Overview of the incidents
On October 27 and October 28, the A1(M) motorway near Bowburn and Carrville in County Durham experienced two separate traffic-blocking events. An overturned heavy-goods vehicle (HGV) on the morning of Oct 28 caused a full northbound closure and limited southbound traffic to the hard shoulder. The previous day, a four-vehicle collision on the southbound carriageway created a blockage between junction 62 (Carrville) and junction 61 (A688 Tursdale Road), leading to significant rush-hour congestion.
02
Overturned lorry – Oct 28
Around 5:14 GMT, a Warburtons-branded lorry overturned just after the Bowburn junction, shedding its load of bread across both carriageways. The northbound lane was closed in full, while southbound traffic was restricted to the hard shoulder. Emergency crews rescued the driver, who was taken to University Hospital of North Durham. National Highways North East deployed teams to clear the debris field and repair the central reservation barrier.
03
Four-vehicle collision – Oct 27
At approximately 8:20 am, a collision involving four vehicles blocked the southbound A1(M) between junction 62 and junction 61. Two people were hospitalized at University Hospital of North Durham; the other two received on-scene treatment and were released. The road was cleared later in the morning, allowing traffic to return to normal.

Official responses
Durham Constabulary confirmed the lorry incident, noting the immediate closure of the northbound carriageway and the hard-shoulder restriction southbound. The North East Ambulance Service detailed its response, dispatching a double-crewed ambulance, a clinical team leader, and Hazardous Area Response Team vehicles. Fire crews from Spennymoor and Durham assisted with the driver’s extraction and left the scene by 5:47 am. For the October 27 crash, Durham Constabulary and the North East Ambulance Service similarly reported their calls and the provision of medical care.
