01

New Selfie-Based Age Verification in iOS 27.2

Apple added a selfie-based age-verification system to iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2, allowing users in supported regions to prove they are adults without providing a credit-card number or government-issued identification. The update was released on October 26, according to Apple’s support documentation.

02

How the Feature Works

The verification process requires users to follow on-screen prompts that capture their face from four angles by turning and tilting the head. Apple combines on-device processing with analysis performed through its Private Cloud Compute service. The intermediate results are merged locally, and Apple states that the images are inaccessible to the company and any third party during processing. After a successful verification, the selfie is deleted from the device.

03

Availability and Triggers

The feature is offered only in regions where local regulations require adult verification. Apple notes that users may encounter the prompt when setting up an Apple ID, installing a software update, accessing apps rated 18 +, or adjusting safety controls. Once a user’s adult status is confirmed, Apple says no further verification is needed for that device.

04

Privacy Safeguards

Apple emphasizes that the entire verification flow is designed to protect user privacy. By keeping image analysis on the device and in a private cloud environment, the company claims that personal facial data never leaves the user’s control and is removed immediately after verification.

05

Potential Impact

The selfie-based system could simplify compliance with age-restriction laws for developers and regulators while reducing friction for adult users. By eliminating the need for credit-card or ID submission, Apple aims to broaden access to age-restricted content while maintaining a privacy-first approach.
