History

In 1989 the International Triathlon Union (now World Triathlon) was created to secure Olympic status. Its effort succeeded when triathlon debuted at the Sydney 2000 Games with 100 athletes (48 women, 52 men) and later added a mixed relay in 2021. The 2026 Hyrox-World Triathlon partnership, granting Hyrox official discipline status, echoes that breakthrough and aims to expand participation worldwide.
