01

The Collision

A high-speed train traveling from Madrid to Seville collided with a stationary train near the town of Urda, about 90 miles south of the capital. The impact derailed both trains, shearing one from the tracks and throwing passengers from the nearly 400-person train into chaos. Survivors described being jolted violently while those on the stopped train, which carried 147 passengers, were thrown into the wreckage. Emergency crews, including firefighters and a military unit, worked manually through twisted steel and crushed seats to reach victims.

02

Earlier Crash and Safety Debate

This incident follows a January derailment on the same high-speed line, in which a train operated by the same carrier struck another train, resulting in 46 deaths. The earlier crash sparked public debate over the adequacy of Spain’s railway safety measures and set a precedent for concerns that resurfaced after the latest collision.

03

Official Response

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited the crash site and pledged a thorough investigation. He stated that any failures in the safety system would be addressed decisively. The government has ordered the suspension of all high-speed services between Madrid and the southern province of Andalusia pending the investigation’s outcome.

04

Impact and Service Suspension

The collision has become Spain’s deadliest rail accident in more than a decade, with at least 68 fatalities reported. Families of victims are searching for loved ones amid reports of limited information from authorities. The suspension of the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed corridor disrupts travel for hundreds of passengers daily and adds pressure on the upcoming national elections, where railway safety is likely to be a prominent issue.
