Background & Context

The Pink Line is a 21-km corridor of Namma Metro’s Phase 2 network, linking the southern neighbourhood of Kalena Agrahara with the northern area of Nagawara. The line comprises a 7.5-km elevated stretch and a 13.8-km underground segment. The elevated portion, which includes six stations—Kalena Agrahara, Hulimavu, IIM-B, JP Nagar 4th Phase, Jayadeva Hospital and Tavarekere—has been under construction since 2017. Repeated delays, including the termination of the original contractor for alleged non-performance, pushed the expected opening from an earlier August target to the present schedule.

Core Event – CMRS Clearance Issued

On October 28, 2026, the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) for the Southern Circle, V. Venkatasubramanian, granted safety clearance for the elevated stretch. The clearance followed a statutory inspection conducted from October 6 onward, during which speed trials were run on both up and down lines on October 27 using a special train equipped with an OMS 2000 system. The trials achieved speeds of up to 90 kmph, while the CMRS order authorized passenger operations at a maximum of 80 kmph (or the limit set by the Automatic Train Protection system, whichever is lower) and capped platform speeds at 60 kmph. The order also stipulated conditions related to fire safety, CCTV surveillance, accessibility, staff training, maintenance facilities, and a one-month monitoring period after revenue service begins.

What’s Next

The inauguration is slated for November 15, 2026, pending confirmation from the Prime Minister’s office. If the ceremony proceeds as anticipated, commercial passenger services on the elevated stretch are expected to commence shortly thereafter. The underground segment of the Pink Line, extending from Dairy Circle to Nagawara, is slated for trial runs in November, with full operation projected for 2027.

The clearance and forthcoming inauguration will push Bengaluru’s metro network beyond the 100-km threshold, enhancing connectivity between the city’s southern and central districts and laying groundwork for the eventual north-bound underground extension.
