01

Argentine Officials Facilitate Flávio Bolsonaro’s Departure

Brazilian senator and former presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro entered Argentina from the Misiones border late on Tuesday and, within two hours, boarded a private Gulfstream G400 jet at Puerto Iguazú International Airport. The aircraft, owned by Baires Fly and positioned in the city since the previous Monday, took off with Bolsonaro, his wife and two daughters, made a technical stop in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and landed in Miami, avoiding Brazilian airspace entirely.

02

Political Background and Legal Constraints

Bolsonaro, a 45-year-old right-wing senator and son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, lost Brazil’s presidential runoff to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He faces multiple criminal investigations in Brazil, and Supreme Federal Court justice Alexandre de Moraes had barred him from leaving the country and cancelled his passports. Despite the judicial ban, the senator crossed the Tancredo Neves bridge at 10:50 p.m. local time and departed Argentina the following night.

03

Opposition Demands and Legal Actions

Opposition lawmakers, including veteran Peronist Agustín Rossi and congresswoman Marcela Pagano, have filed a criminal complaint before the Federal Court in Puerto Iguazú. The complaint seeks to determine who organized the passage and whether Argentine officials facilitated it. Rossi announced a request to summon Cabinet Chief Diego Santilli before Congress, while the Unión por la Patria bloc demanded an explanation for why the aircraft was not detained or its departure delayed while Bolsonaro’s legal status was verified. The complaint also asks for border-bridge camera footage, aeronautical records and Airport Security Police duty logs.

04

Government Responses and Acknowledgments

Argentina’s National Directorate of Migration initially denied any record of Bolsonaro’s presence or flight plans. The Milei administration later confirmed the passage at 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, after the aircraft had already taken off. A statement from the government noted the presence of presidential adviser Santiago Caputo at the airport earlier in the week, a detail highlighted by the opposition.

05

Flight Details and Route

The private jet’s itinerary included a police escort from the border crossing to the airport, a stopover in Guayaquil, and a final landing in Miami. The flight avoided Brazilian airspace throughout, and the aircraft had been stationed in Puerto Iguazú since the Monday before the departure.

The unfolding case places the Milei administration under congressional scrutiny to clarify whether Argentine authorities acted as an “escape route” for a Brazilian politician barred from leaving his own country.
