History

The Second Vatican Council, convoked by Pope John XXIII and held from 11 October 1962 to 8 December 1965, gathered roughly 2,500 bishops to revise Church teaching. Its documents—especially Gaudium et Spes and Sacrosanctum Concilium—authorized vernacular liturgy, ecumenical dialogue, and a “People of God” vision that reshaped papal diplomacy and modern outreach. This legacy underpins today’s South American papal visits and exhibitions highlighting the Church’s mobility and cultural engagement.
