History

In February–March 1995 Maharashtra held assembly elections, and the Shiv Sena–BJP Mahayuti won a decisive majority, securing 285 of 288 seats and installing Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi as the state’s first non-Congress chief minister. The alliance’s later fracture enabled Congress candidate Abhijeet Wanjari to defeat BJP’s Sudhakar Kohale for the Nagpur Division Graduates council seat, reviving internal Mahayuti power-sharing debates.
