- On 25 February 2001 Liverpool ended a six-year major-trophy drought by beating Birmingham City 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the Worthington Cup final at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. The match was the first English cup final held outside England and the first to be decided by a shoot-out, reflecting Wembley’s reconstruction. Manager Gérard Houllier secured his first English silverware, launching Liverpool’s treble-winning season.
