Coroner Determines Peptide Use Triggered Fatal Cardiac Arrest

Victorian Coroner David Ryan concluded that the March 2025 death of 75-year-old actor and martial-arts trainer Richard Norton was caused by complications from injecting the unapproved peptide products CJC1295 and ipamorelin. He recommended that the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) reassess the safety risks of such peptides and consider tighter controls.

02

Timeline of Treatment and Events

  • 19 March 2025 – Norton received a prescription for CJC1295 and ipamorelin from Dr Jerzy Muchnicki after a discussion of the experimental nature of peptide therapy.
  • 28 March 2025 – Norton told a nurse he was administering double the prescribed dose. The nurse advised him to return to the prescribed dose.
  • 30 March 2025 – Hours after the warning, Norton injected the peptides, experienced a hot, flushed sensation, became unresponsive, and suffered cardiac arrest. He died later that day at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital.

03

Background on Peptide Therapy and Regulatory Status

CJC1295 and ipamorelin are synthetic peptides marketed online for weight loss, muscle growth, anti-ageing and performance enhancement. In Australia they are not approved by the TGA for any therapeutic indication, though they can be accessed through certain practitioner pathways and compounded by pharmacies. Norton had previously used peptides prescribed by another practitioner for fatigue, shoulder pain and loss of lean muscle mass.

04

Medical Board Investigation and Findings

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency referred the case to the Medical Board of Australia (MBA). Independent expert clinical professor Alistair Vickery testified that there is insufficient evidence that CJC1295 or ipamorelin are safe or effective for human use. The MBA found Dr Muchnicki’s clinical notes “sparse, inadequate and perfunctory,” below expected standards. While formal regulatory action was not taken, the board required Dr Muchnicki to undergo training in record-keeping and placed a caution on his practice.

05

Official Responses from the Therapeutic Goods Administration

The TGA reiterated its warnings about the risks of unapproved peptides that have not been assessed for safety, quality or effectiveness. Following the coroner’s findings, the agency said it continues to communicate these risks to health practitioners and is assessing whether additional regulatory measures are appropriate.

Data & Statistics

  • Age: 75 years
  • Medical history: asthma, osteoarthritis, bilateral shoulder reconstructions
  • Prescribed dose: standard therapeutic dose (exact amount not disclosed)
  • Actual dose: double the prescribed amount, self-administered
  • Outcome: cardiac arrest and death on 30 March 2025

What’s Next

The coroner’s recommendation urges the TGA to review the safety profile of CJC1295, ipamorelin and similar peptides. The TGA indicated it is continuing its risk assessment and will consider further regulatory measures to protect consumers.
