Strategic Shift from Oil to Digital

Launched in 2016, Jio built India’s largest wireless network, serving more than 530 million customers and becoming the country’s second-largest single-country telecom operator after China Mobile. The IPO was promoted as a cornerstone of Mukesh Ambani’s plan to transform Reliance into an “everything company” spanning consumer products, technology and financial services.

03
Use of Proceeds
Jio Platforms will allocate up to $2.89 billion of net IPO proceeds to pre-pay up to 27,500 crore rupees of borrowings of its telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. Remaining funds are earmarked for general corporate purposes, including further development of digital infrastructure and technology services.

Company Leaders’ Remarks
Akash Ambani, managing director of Jio Platforms, framed the listing as a step toward a “truly digital society” with Jio at its core and outlined a ten-year vision to democratise emerging technologies such as AI, cloud computing, connected devices and satellite connectivity. Mukesh Ambani expressed pride as the family rang the ceremonial bell on October 28 2026 and highlighted the IPO’s role in reducing Jio’s legacy telecom debt by roughly 300 billion rupees.
05
Analyst Concerns
- Capital intensity: Kranthi Bathini of WealthMills Securities noted competition, heavy capital spending and upcoming changes to India’s telecom spectrum regime as potential headwinds.
- Cash flow outlook: Nomura analysts observed that Jio’s focus has shifted from subscriber acquisition to extracting higher earnings per user, citing the winding down of the 5G investment cycle as a source of freed cash flow.
- Debt reduction impact: Anurag Singh of Ansid Capital highlighted that the modest 3 percent share dilution wiped out nearly 300 billion rupees of debt, aligning Jio’s market cap with U.S. telecom giants AT&T and Verizon.

Implications for Reliance and Indian Markets
The debut reinforces Reliance’s transition from a resource-focused conglomerate to a digital-services powerhouse. By securing the second-largest market capitalisation in India, Jio Platforms provides a cash-generation engine that can fund further technology investments, including a contemplated low-Earth-orbit satellite constellation. The IPO also underscores India’s emergence as a busy IPO market in 2026, with 246 listings to date, though the country ranked fourth globally by capital raised.
