History

During the 1988 Iran-Iraq war, the frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts, deployed for Operation Earnest Will, hit an Iranian mine on 14 April. Four days later Admiral William J. Crowe ordered Operation Praying Mantis, which destroyed two Iranian oil platforms, sank the frigate Sahand and three fast-attack boats. The raid set a precedent for swift US naval retaliation to mine threats.
