History

During the August 1968 Democratic National Convention, Mayor Richard J. Daley ordered 800 National Guard troops to confront roughly 10,000 anti-war demonstrators, a clash the Walker Report later labeled a “police riot” and that spurred Department of Justice investigations and reforms to delegate selection. The 2026 Trump-Obama rallies, now under a Justice Department probe, echo that historic link between incendiary campaign rhetoric and federal scrutiny.
