03
Compensation and Safety Concerns
The Rs 2 million compensation package aims to provide immediate financial relief to the families of the ten deceased PPHI workers. The incident has revived concerns about the safety of oxygen cylinders and other medical equipment used in ambulances, especially in remote desert districts where maintenance resources are limited. Authorities have not yet identified the technical cause of the cylinder explosion.
04
Context of Prior Medical Facility Fires
The tragedy follows a previous incident in August when an exploding air-conditioner caused a fire at a nursery in the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad, killing 15 newborns. Both events have heightened calls for stricter safety protocols in health-care settings across Pakistan.
05
Ongoing Investigation
Investigators are examining the ambulance’s equipment and handling procedures to determine why the oxygen cylinder detonated. The outcome of the inquiry, expected to be reported by the Health Department, will inform future safety standards for emergency medical services in the region.
