Discord to Make Messages from Large Public Servers Searchable on Google

In this breakdown

01

Core Change and Timeline

On November 16, 2026 Discord will publish a public “Server Web Page” for every Discoverable Server—large communities that can be joined without an invitation and have at least 1,000 members. The pages will show basic server information and automated summaries of activity in selected public channels. Beginning in mid-December 2026, Discord will start indexing individual messages posted in those channels, allowing the exact wording of the messages to appear in Google search results. Usernames and avatars will be omitted from the indexed content.

02

Background & Context

Discord has long been the primary gathering place for gamers and other niche communities, but most conversations remain hidden behind the app and require a user account to view. By creating searchable web pages, Discord hopes to surface that information without forcing users to join the platform first.

Data & Statistics

  • 63,000+ Discoverable Servers exist at the time of the announcement.
  • Eligibility requires >= 1,000 members, a minimum age of eight weeks, and compliance with Discord’s safety standards.
  • The feature is enabled by default in most regions; it is off by default in the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea to meet local regulations.
  • Teen accounts are excluded from the indexing option entirely.
  • Only messages sent after the rollout are eligible; earlier history will not be published.

04

Official Statements & Responses

Discord frames the rollout as a solution to the “information being locked” problem, stating that the new Server Web Pages will let anyone find answers through a standard web search. The company emphasizes that the feature does not reveal usernames or avatars, and that both server administrators and individual members can opt out of participation via the “Web Presence” and “Data and Privacy” settings, respectively. Discord also warns that messages already posted while the option is enabled may still appear unless the user deletes them, and that search engines could retain cached copies for an indeterminate period.

05

Criticism & Opposition

Privacy advocates and some technology commentators have highlighted concerns that indexing public chats could expose personal details inadvertently shared in messages, even without usernames. BGR notes that the move comes after Discord faced backlash over age-verification policies, suggesting a pattern of controversial privacy decisions.

Verbatim Quotes

  • “This has led to valuable information being locked in Discord conversations, inaccessible to the wider internet. We want to fix this.” — What's Discord
  • “Anyone can see it, including people without a Discord account, and search engines like Google can show it in their results,” — What's Discord

07

Future Outlook

Discord advises server owners to review the “Web Presence” settings now and to inform members about the upcoming visibility changes. The company has indicated that the rollout will proceed as scheduled, with no further extensions announced.
