01

Attack Overview

On September 24 2025 at 10:53 p.m., a petrol-filled device was ignited and thrown over a gate toward the entrance of a hotel on Dingley Road in Islington, north London. Security guards quickly extinguished the resulting blaze, and no one was injured. The incident was captured on CCTV, which later became a key piece of evidence.

02

Investigation and Evidence

Met Police investigators used the CCTV footage to trace the masked, black-clad suspect from the hotel grounds to the front door of his flat. A specialist fire-investigation dog, Simba, located a glove in a nearby bin; DNA from the glove matched that of Mark Neville, 65. Additional DNA matched glass fragments recovered from the bomb. Searches of Neville’s flat uncovered internet activity related to far-right activism, migration, and asylum seekers, as well as messages about immigration. Local residents assisted police by identifying the suspect from the video.

03

Legal Proceedings

Detectives arrested Neville on September 26, 2025, less than two days after the attack. He was charged with arson with intent to endanger life, criminal damage, possession of a bladed article, and possession of a prohibited weapon (a stun gun) in a private place. Neville pleaded guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court on October 28, 2025, to attempted arson recklessly endangering life and the other offences. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.

04

Motive and Context

Met Police stated that the totality of the evidence—particularly the online searches and Neville’s attendance at anti-immigration marches, including one outside the targeted hotel—suggested the attack was motivated by hatred and anger toward immigration.

05

Aftermath

Following the incident, the Dingley Road hotel stopped operating as accommodation for migrants. Community members and law-enforcement agencies highlighted the rapid response that prevented injuries and led to the suspect’s identification and prosecution.
