Life and Career Overview

Sommer was born November 5, 1940 in Berlin. After her family evacuated to Franconia in 1942, her father, a Lutheran pastor, died when she was 14. In 1958 she won the Miss Viareggio beauty contest, attracting director Vittorio De Sica, who offered her a role in *Men and Noblemen*. She adopted the stage name “Sommer” and began a European film career.

Her Hollywood breakthrough arrived with *The Prize* (1963). The performance earned her the Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer in 1964. That year she appeared as Maria Gambrelli in Blake Edwards’ *A Shot in the Dark*, opposite Peter Sellers. Other notable films include *The Art of Love* (1965), *The Oscar* (1966), *Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number!* (1966), *The Wrecking Crew* (1968), *Baron Blood* (1972), *Lisa and the Devil* (1973) and *And Then There Were None* (1974).

From the late 1970s she shifted toward television, appearing on *The Tonight Show*, *Hollywood Squares*, and *The Muppet Show*. In 2000 she voiced Yzma in the German dub of *The Emperor’s New Groove*, and her final credited role was the voice of Nette in the animated short *A Thousand Kisses* (2017).

She married Hollywood columnist Joe Hyams in 1964; they divorced in 1981. She wed Wolf Walther on August 29, 1993, and the marriage lasted until his death. She had no children.
