Recent Beef Theft
Early Thursday morning, a tractor-trailer parked on the 5200 block of Devereaux Avenue in Wissinoming was broken into while the driver slept. Thieves cut the rear padlock and removed five pallets of frozen beef, an estimated $10,000 worth of cargo. The driver recorded the suspects’ vehicles—a dark gray Nissan sedan and two dark-colored SUVs—and reported the loss to police shortly after 4 a.m.
02
Earlier Crab Theft
The beef robbery follows a cargo heist on Tuesday morning in Southwest Philadelphia. Around 4 a.m., a driver sleeping on the 3400 block of Island Avenue was awakened by movement and saw six men loading two pallets of frozen snow crab (?3,000 lb) into a gray Ford F-150 and a gray Dodge Caravan. Police recovered evidence but have not made arrests.

Background & Context
Philadelphia has seen a surge of refrigerated-truck thefts this month, including a $40,000 ground-beef theft in Northeast Philadelphia and a September robbery of Black Angus beef ribs in South Philadelphia. Law-enforcement officials note that long-haul drivers often park overnight in limited, poorly lit areas, making the trailers easy targets.
04
Data & Statistics
- Beef theft: 5 pallets, ?$10,000 value.
- Crab theft: 2 pallets, ?3,000 lb (1.5 tons) of frozen snow crab.
- Prior month’s beef thefts: >$40,000 in Northeast Philadelphia; additional smaller robberies in South Philadelphia.
- Cumulative cargo thefts this month: three major incidents (beef, crab, earlier beef).

Verbatim Quotes

- “One guy said, ‘We’ll pay you,’ and then all of a sudden one guy charging on me so I [had] to run from that corner all the way to the Resident Inn,” — Marty Muriuki
- “They’re all concerning, obviously, but right now it's really too early to tell if it's connected to anything. We are in constant communication with the captain of Northeast Detectives, our Major Crimes, and as well as our federal partners,” — Captain Joseph Busa
