01

Explosion and Fatalities

On September 25, a gas explosion ripped through a two-storey building on Lysikratous Street in Athens’ historic Plaka district, collapsing the structure and killing six people. The victims included four American citizens, one British citizen and one Greek citizen. Fire brigade officials said the blast occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. when a resident switched on a light, igniting accumulated gas.

02

Investigation Findings

The Greek Fire Service’s Arson Crimes Division, led by Fire Lieutenant Colonel Dimitris Dimakogiannis, reconstructed the incident using CCTV footage, forensic analysis of the gas meter and pipelines, and laboratory examinations at the National Technical University of Athens. Electrical engineers, a chemist and university scientists identified the leak’s origin within the building’s internal gas installation, adjacent to the meter. Both Professor Petros Tsakiridis and court-appointed expert Tasos Dedes confirmed that the leak resulted from damage to the active gas line.

03

Arrests and Suspects

Authorities arrested three men on October 29: two Greek nationals and one Albanian national. The suspects, aged 34, 37 and 55, were captured on camera entering the building shortly before the explosion, remaining inside for several minutes before exiting with a section of copper pipe. Police records indicate the 34-year-old has been arrested more than 20 times, while the other two have each faced about 15 previous arrests for theft, robbery, weapons offences, drug-related crimes and grievous bodily harm.

04

Official Response

Greek prosecutors are set to receive the suspects on October 30, with the investigation continuing under the fire brigade’s crime investigation unit. Officials emphasized that the theft of copper piping from an active natural-gas supply line directly caused the lethal leak, underscoring the danger of illicit metal-scrapping activities.

05

Implications

The case highlights the public-safety risks posed by illegal copper theft, prompting calls for tighter security of gas infrastructure and increased monitoring of known repeat offenders. Law-enforcement agencies are reviewing protocols to detect and prevent similar incidents, aiming to safeguard historic urban areas from comparable hazards.
