01

New iPad mini unveiled – key specifications

Apple announced its “biggest update ever” for the iPad mini, delivering a thinner, lighter tablet that incorporates an OLED screen. The device retains a 60 Hz refresh rate and does not include ProMotion technology. It also gains an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance, marking the first time an iPad has achieved that level of protection.

02

OLED display and refresh-rate choice

Apple’s vice president of Hardware Engineering Dave Pakula explained that the OLED panel’s fast pixel-response time—more than an order of magnitude quicker than LCD—significantly reduces motion blur, creating smoother motion despite the 60 Hz refresh rate. He noted that the combination of rapid response, high contrast, brightness, and color accuracy makes the display “a killer” visual experience, even without the higher refresh-rate feature.

03

Acoustic Display and durability

Pakula described a new “Acoustic Display” system that leverages the tablet’s resonant frequency, which falls within the audible range of a traditional woofer. Custom drivers energize the display to emit mid- and low-frequency sound directly through the enclosure, while tiny tweeters positioned at each end handle higher frequencies via hidden ports between the glass and aluminum. This approach delivers surprisingly rich audio for a device of the iPad mini’s size and complements its IP67-rated durability.

04

Position within Apple’s product lineup

He framed the mini as a companion to the iPhone Duo, emphasizing its portability while retaining the broader iPad ecosystem’s capabilities.

05

Official statements & upcoming availability

Pakula’s interviews with technology journalists highlighted the design priorities—display quality, acoustic innovation, and ruggedness—but Apple has not yet disclosed a specific launch date or pricing details. The company’s official communications suggest the updated iPad mini will enter the market later this year, pending final production timelines.
