Rescue on Achill Island
A newly-engaged pair walking along Keel Beach on Achill Island, off County Mayo, were trapped by a rapidly incoming tide and a sheer coastal cliff. Gale-force winds, reported as Force 8 to 10, pushed the water up the beach to above knee-level, leaving the couple unable to retreat. After dialing 999, they were air-lifted by the Irish Coast Guard and hauled roughly 150 m (490 ft) up the cliff to safety, as boat and helicopter approaches were deemed too hazardous.

How the Rescue Unfolded
Coast Guard volunteer Peter McManamon coordinated the operation. He explained that the rough sea conditions prevented the deployment of a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) and that the waves made a crew-led approach along the rocks unsafe. Consequently, a helicopter was tasked to extract the pair, completing the rescue despite the severe weather.

Official Statement
Peter McManamon described the incident to BBC News NI, emphasizing the couple’s luck and the extreme conditions that limited rescue options.
“It was too rough for a rib (rigid inflatable boat) to be tasked - it was blowing Force 8 to 10 at the time and the wave conditions wouldn't let us,” — Peter McManamon

What the Incident Highlights
The rescue underscores the dangers of coastal walks during rapidly changing tides and severe weather on Ireland’s west coast. It also illustrates the Irish Coast Guard’s reliance on aerial assets when sea conditions preclude boat operations, reinforcing the importance of timely emergency calls in remote, exposed locations.
