Apple Floods Stores with iPhone Duo Stock, Leaving Pre-Orders Sparse

01
Launch-Day Inventory Allocation
Apple directed roughly 80 % of its initial iPhone Duo supply to its retail locations. Most stores received as few as 50 units, while flagship outlets held up to about 250 units each. Fifth Avenue in New York was stocked unusually heavily because Apple executives attended the launch. The distribution strategy was detailed by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who cited sources close to the device’s logistics.
02
Effect on Pre-Orders and In-Store Purchases
On October 16, the launch day, the heavy in-store allocation explains why pre-orders dropped to late January within minutes, yet the majority of customers who queued at Apple stores walked away with a new phone. Gurman noted that most early buyers who waited in line received a Duo on the first day.

03
Pricing and Regional Availability
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for the 256 GB model, with higher-capacity options priced at $2,199 (512 GB), $2,599 (1 TB) and $3,199 (2 TB) in the United States. In the United Kingdom, the same storage tiers are priced at £1,999, £2,199, £2,599 and £3,199 respectively.
04
Apple’s Official Response
Apple characterized demand for the Duo as “nothing short of extraordinary” and said it was working to satisfy that demand “as quickly as possible.” The company indicated that even if a delivery estimate appears far out, it could improve over time as inventory is reallocated.
05
Why the Distribution Matters
By concentrating inventory in stores, Apple ensured that walk-in customers could obtain the device immediately, but it also created a sharp contrast with the limited availability of online pre-orders. This approach highlights Apple’s emphasis on in-store experiences for premium launches and may influence how future high-price models are allocated across sales channels.
