01
Scope of the Recall and Reported Injuries
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of approximately 5.9 million Bodum French-press coffee makers that feature replaceable glass carafes. The recall covers 8-cup and 12-cup models—including the Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper, and Kenya lines—sold nationwide through retailers such as Target, Walmart, Amazon, and other home-goods stores. The CPSC said it has received 70 reports of the glass carafes cracking or shattering during use, with 48 of those reports describing burn injuries to consumers.
02
Safety Risk and Product Details
According to the CPSC notice, the glass carafes can break when metal spoons or other metal utensils are used to stir coffee, creating a risk of hot liquid spilling onto the user. Most affected units display the Bodum name on the frame and inside the lid, and many carry engraved warnings on the glass carafe itself. The recall applies to units sold from 1974 through October 2026.
03
Official Response from Bodum USA
Bodum USA issued a statement confirming the recall and urging customers to stop using metal utensils in the glass carafes. The company is offering a free plastic stirring spoon and a warning label to owners who contact the firm for replacement parts. Bodum emphasized that the recall is a precautionary measure intended to prevent further injuries.
04
Consumer Guidance and Expected Impact
Consumers who own any of the listed Bodum French-press models are advised to discontinue use immediately, remove the glass carafe, and contact Bodum for the complimentary plastic spoon and label. Retailers are expected to remove the recalled items from shelves and update online listings. The large volume of recalled units—nearly 6 million—highlights the importance of adhering to manufacturer warnings and may prompt broader scrutiny of kitchen-ware designs that incorporate fragile glass components.
