01
New Editing Capabilities Across File Types
Google Gemini now lets users generate, preview, and edit a range of file formats directly within the chat interface. Users can create text documents, spreadsheets, slide decks, PDFs, Markdown, plain-text files and even code, then modify them inline by highlighting sections and prompting Gemini for changes. The system can transform a highlighted table into a graph, adjust tone or structure of a presentation, and convert prompts into fully-formatted Google Slides or downloadable PPTX files. PDF preview and editing are supported on both the web and mobile versions, while the other formats are currently web-only.
02
Platform Availability and Limitations
The feature launched for all Gemini users today, with full-screen editing available on the web. Mobile users can edit PDFs, but editing of Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Markdown, TXT files and code requires the web version. The update also introduces a refreshed Android overlay design featuring a translucent, blurred pill-shaped bar, first seen on Pixel 11 devices and now rolled out to other Android phones. Users who do not see the new UI are advised to force-stop the Google app.
03
How the Feature Works Within Gemini
Google describes the workflow as “highlight-to-prompt”: users select text or a table, then ask Gemini to perform a specific action, such as converting data into a chart or rephrasing content. Generated files can be opened directly in the corresponding Google Workspace app or downloaded as PDFs. The system supports live creation and editing for all languages where the Gemini app is available, and files can be saved to Google Drive.
04
Potential Impact on Productivity
By consolidating document creation and revision inside a conversational AI, Gemini reduces the need to switch between separate apps, potentially streamlining workflows for students, professionals and developers. The integration builds on earlier Gemini capabilities that allowed file generation and downloading, extending the AI’s role from content creation to iterative editing. Analysts note that such in-app editing may increase reliance on AI-assisted productivity tools within Google’s ecosystem.
