01

Planned Overnight Closure

Suffolk Highways announced that the A143 between Stanton and Ixworth will be closed from Saturday night at 20:00 GMT until 05:00 GMT the following morning. The shutdown is intended to carry out temporary repairs on the most severely damaged sections of the carriageway. Traffic will be diverted according to a management plan that will be released after the investigations are completed.

02

Persistent Surface Deterioration Since 2025 Resurfacing

The stretch of the A143, a key commuter route north-east of Bury St Edmunds, was resurfaced in September 2025. Since then, motorists, local residents and businesses have reported recurring potholes and surface failures. Summer repairs were previously undertaken when unusually hot weather appeared to melt portions of the surface, but the problems have persisted.

03

Suffolk Highways’ Response

Suffolk Highways said the overnight works are a “temporary” measure while the authority conducts tests to determine why the road surface continues to deteriorate. Officials emphasized that the findings will inform a long-term solution and a future programme of further works. They also pledged to keep local communities, elected members and road users informed once investigation results, timings and traffic-management arrangements are finalised.

04

Investigation and Future Work

The council will carry out diagnostic tests on the pavement to identify underlying causes, such as material failure or sub-grade issues. Results will be used to develop a comprehensive repair strategy, including the scheduling of additional works along the A143. Details of the forthcoming programme, including dates and traffic-management plans, will be communicated to stakeholders after the investigations conclude.
