Incident overview
On Thursday 29 October, video posted by the family of former teacher Enoch Burke shows him and another man confronting Archbishop John McDowell, Primate of All Ireland, in the grounds of St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral in Armagh after a funeral service. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed it is investigating an alleged assault on a member of the clergy.
02
Legal background of Enoch Burke
Burke, a former history and German teacher at Wilson’s Hospital School, was dismissed earlier this year after refusing a court-ordered direction that a transgender pupil be addressed with the pronoun “they.” The school obtained an injunction restraining him from attending the premises; Burke defied the order multiple times. A court judgement described his conduct as “gross misconduct” and noted his refusal to comply with the pronoun direction. He has been imprisoned for more than 700 days for contempt of court and, on the day of the incident, was banned from coming within 100 metres of the school in County Westmeath.
