01

Launch of Major Development Initiatives

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre in Bhildi, Banaskantha district, and laid foundation stones for development projects valued at INR14,000 crore. The ceremony also marked the release of the 24th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme, which provides INR6,000 per year to eligible farmers.

02

Government Schemes and Financial Impact on Agriculture

Modi highlighted five flagship schemes that together have delivered or saved roughly INR50 trillion for Indian farmers. Since its 2019 launch, PM-Kisan has transferred about INR4.5 trillion directly to smallholders, while the latest instalment moved more than INR18,000 crore into the accounts of around 10 crore farmers. The government claims to have spent about INR16 trillion to shield farmers from rising global fertilizer prices, noting that a bag of urea costing INR3,000 internationally is sold to Indian cultivators for under INR300, and a bag of DAP priced above INR5,000 abroad is supplied at INR1,350. Additional support includes INR24 trillion disbursed through the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system over 12 years, over INR2 trillion in compensation via the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, and the installation of nearly 1.2 million solar-powered irrigation pumps under the PM-KUSUM scheme.

The remarks came after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s comment that sparked a political controversy. Modi’s address linked the development projects and farmer-focused schemes to a broader narrative of national resilience and progress despite external geopolitical tensions affecting energy and fertilizer imports.
