The Bihar Museum in Patna has been placed ninth in the *World’s 100 Best Museums 2026* list compiled by the German travel guide Worth a Journey. The ranking makes the museum the highest-ranked institution in Asia and the only Indian museum on the list, ahead of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (10th) and the Louvre (31st).
The top five museums are:
1. Museo Nacional de Antropología – Mexico
2. Museo del Prado – Spain
3. Louisiana Museum of Modern Art – Denmark
4. State Hermitage Museum – Russia
5. Kunsthistorisches Museum – Austria
02
Background and Development
Construction began in 2013; a partial opening occurred in 2015, and the museum was fully inaugurated in 2017. The 13.9-acre campus was designed by Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, a Pritzker laureate, with Studio Opolis (Mumbai). Galleries trace Bihar’s history from the Stone Age to the 18th century, featuring the Mauryan Didarganj Yakshi, Kushan “Birth of the Buddha” slab, Kurkihar bronzes, coins, manuscripts and folk art.
The project was conceived by former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and realized through the Bihar government and museum administrators.
