Afeela 1: Sony-Honda Mobility's Entry into the Electric Vehicle Market

1/6/2026, 12:14:04 AM

Overview of the Afeela 1 Launch

Sony-Honda Mobility (SHM) has commenced preproduction of its first electric vehicle, the Afeela 1, at Honda’s East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio. The vehicle is set to debut around mid-2026, although specific production and delivery dates remain unconfirmed. The Afeela 1 will feature a dual-motor setup with approximately 400 horsepower, a 91-kilowatt-hour battery offering a range of around 300 miles, and DC fast-charging capabilities of up to 150 kW via a Tesla-style NACS plug. Despite these specifications, the vehicle faces stiff competition in a crowded market segment, with rivals offering superior performance at similar or lower price points.

Design and Features

The Afeela 1 is designed to blend Honda's automotive expertise with Sony's technological innovations. It will include an array of 40 sensors, comprising 18 cameras, one lidar module, nine radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, aimed at enhancing safety and enabling future Level 3 automated driving capabilities. However, it will not be Level 3-capable at launch. The vehicle's interior is expected to feature a PlayStation 5, aiming to attract tech-savvy consumers, alongside comfort and entertainment gadgets.

Pricing and Availability

The Afeela 1 will be available in a Signature trim starting at $102,900, with a more affordable Origin model expected to launch in 2027 at $89,900. Reservations for the Afeela 1 require a refundable deposit of $200, but are limited to California residents, who must also garage and register the vehicle in the state.

Criticism of Specifications

Critics have raised concerns regarding the Afeela 1's specifications, particularly its range and charging speed. Comparisons have been made to vehicles like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which offers a longer range and faster charging at a significantly lower price. Additionally, competitors such as the Lucid Air provide superior performance metrics, including higher horsepower and greater range, raising questions about the Afeela 1's market viability.

Official Statements & Responses

Susan Dulik, SHM's product quality leader, emphasized the company's commitment to delivering a high-quality experience, stating, “We will ensure that all integrated functions installed in the vehicle operate completely as designed to deliver the experience promised by AFEELA.” This commitment to quality is positioned as a key differentiator for the Afeela 1.

What's Next for Afeela

Looking ahead, SHM has hinted at developing additional models, including a crossover and a more affordable compact vehicle, which may broaden its appeal in the U.S. market. The Afeela 1 remains one of the most anticipated electric vehicle launches of 2026, but its success will depend on how well it can compete against established players in the electric vehicle sector.

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

While SHM has outlined its production plans and features, there remains uncertainty regarding the vehicle's performance in the competitive landscape. Critics question whether the Afeela 1 can attract buyers given its modest specifications compared to rivals, suggesting that the company's strategy may need reevaluation to ensure market success.
