Core Initiative: Micro-Drama Pilot
Paramount+ plans to launch a pilot of “micro dramas” – short, vertical, soap-style series with snack-sized episodes – on its mobile app within the next few months. The rollout will begin this quarter, with the content limited to the app’s mobile interface. Internal staff were briefed that the format is intended to create “mobile daily habits at scale” and to shift how viewers consume the service throughout the day.
Background and Industry Context
The move follows a broader industry shift toward short-form video. Earlier this year, Netflix and Disney+ added brief vertical clips to their platforms, while Peacock has been a leader in producing its own micro dramas and licensing content from ReelShort, a category specialist. BET, Paramount’s division focused on Black audiences, announced a partnership with aTwist (formerly MicroCo) in May to develop micro-drama series. Paramount’s parent, David Ellison’s company, has said the effort is meant to make the streamer resemble TikTok, Instagram and YouTube in terms of visit frequency and on-app engagement.
Official Statements & Internal Messaging
During a town-hall presentation viewed by Business Insider, streaming leaders explained that the micro-drama project is in “very early stages” and is designed to “recalibrate consumption behavior” as users become accustomed to watching Paramount+ on the go. A source familiar with the short-form initiative said the goal is to drive higher visit frequency and keep users engaged in the app for longer periods. The internal materials also highlighted that the format is a strategic priority for the service.
Why It Matters
If successful, the micro-drama pilot could increase daily active users and extend viewing sessions, helping Paramount+ compete with other platforms that have already embraced short-form vertical content. The initiative arrives as Paramount navigates a stalled merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, which is currently blocked by a federal judge after a lawsuit by 12 states. Strengthening mobile engagement may provide a growth lever while the larger corporate transaction remains unresolved.
