Gen Z’s Consumer Paradox: Trust-Driven Spending in the Age of TikTok and AI

7/31/2026, 11:05:08 AM

Core Findings – Scrutinizing Every Purchase

Despite a reputation for anti-capitalist sentiment, members of Generation Z are not retreating from consumption. They spend heavily on food, beauty and services, yet each dollar is subject to extensive validation. The pattern—high-volume spending coupled with rigorous vetting—has been labeled the “Gen Z paradox.”

Research Basis and Sample

Yelp’s study, conducted with the Angus Reid Group in early 2026, surveyed 1,323 Americans aged 18-29. The weighted sample was balanced by region, generation and gender. Complementary insights come from PwC’s consumer research, which coined the paradox, and Gallup polling that tracks attitudes toward artificial intelligence.

Trust Preferences and Decision Factors

The Yelp data show that 97 % of respondents research restaurants before buying, with similarly high rates for beauty (94 %), fitness and wellness (93 %), home services (92 %) and professional services (84 %). When choosing where to eat, 89 % prioritize menu details and 87 % price, while ambiance influences roughly three-quarters of diners. For service professionals, price matters to 85 % of respondents, followed by up-to-date business information (81 %) and ease of booking (80 %).

Written reviews dominate trust metrics: 78 % prefer detailed written reviews over influencer recommendations for dining out (versus 59 % for influencers), and 81 % do so for services (versus 61 %). Moreover, 77 % trust platforms that provide extensive written feedback over those offering only star ratings for services, and 76 % hold the same view for restaurants.

TikTok functions as a discovery engine, generating viral interest that leads users to verify options on Yelp. Meanwhile, confidence in AI-generated summaries remains low—only 48 % deem them accurate for service professionals and 43 % for restaurants. Gallup reports that anger toward AI rose from 22 % to 31 % over the past year, even as roughly half of Gen Z continue to use such tools.

Implications for Brands, Review Platforms, and AI Providers

Marketers must recognize that viral hype alone does not convert Gen Z shoppers; detailed, transparent information is essential. Review platforms that emphasize comprehensive written feedback are better positioned to capture this cohort’s loyalty, while AI services will need to demonstrate verifiable source credibility to gain acceptance.

Outlook – Growing Spending Power and Persistent Skepticism

Analysts project Gen Z’s collective spending power to reach about $12 trillion by 2030. The trend suggests that, rather than rejecting capitalism, the generation is demanding proof of value at every step, a stance that will shape retail, hospitality and digital-service strategies for years to come.
