Historic Card on the White House Lawn
The UFC staged the Freedom 250 fight card on the South Lawn of the White House, headlined by Justin Gaethje’s knockout of then-undefeated lightweight champion Ilia Topuria. The event was streamed live on Paramount+ and was not sold as a ticketed or pay-per-view product.
Unprecedented Audience Reach
According to the UFC, the card attracted roughly 34 million viewers worldwide, including about 17 million in the United States and Latin America, making it the most-watched UFC fight card ever in the U.S. market.
Financial Outcome
TKO Group Holdings, the UFC’s parent company, reported that the event generated an approximate $30 million loss, a figure disclosed by chief financial officer Andrew Schleimer during an investor call. The loss stemmed from the absence of ticket, concession, and pay-per-view revenue. Initial estimates had projected a $60 million shortfall, but sponsorships and other brand deals partially offset the deficit. Despite the loss, the second-quarter financial statements released by TKO indicated that the UFC remains broadly profitable.
Company Leadership’s Position
UFC president Dana White told ESPN that the Freedom 250 event was a one-off occasion and that the organization cannot afford to repeat such a model. He also ruled out future events at the Las Vegas Sphere and any similar White House productions.
Implications for Future UFC Events
The financial hit underscores the trade-off between high-profile, non-revenue-generating spectacles and the UFC’s profit margins. While the massive viewership demonstrates strong fan interest, the company’s statements suggest a return to revenue-driven formats for upcoming cards.
