Brazil’s Presidential Race Narrows to a Technical Tie Between Lula and Flavio Bolsonaro

Recent Poll Results

A Nexus poll commissioned by lender BTG Pactual surveyed 2,006 respondents between August 21-23 and found the former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and right-wing senator Flávio Bolsonaro dead-locked in a simulated second-round runoff: 46% for Lula versus 45% for Bolsonaro. The poll’s margin of error is two percentage points.

In a separate Datafolha poll released on August 21, Lula led Bolsonaro 47% to 43% in a runoff scenario, also within a two-point error margin. The same poll showed Lula ahead of Bolsonaro by one point compared with a previous Datafolha survey in July, when the gap was five points (48%-43%).

Earlier Poll Trends

An earlier poll conducted on August 17 recorded Lula at 47% and Bolsonaro at 44% in a simulated runoff, indicating a gradual narrowing of Lula’s lead over the month.

Electoral Implications

Brazil’s presidential system requires a candidate to secure more than 50% of valid votes in the first round to avoid a runoff. If no candidate reaches that threshold, the top two contenders advance to a second round. The current polling suggests both Lula and Bolsonaro are likely to proceed to a runoff, given their combined first-round support exceeds 70% in the Nexus scenario (Lula 41%, Bolsonaro 37%).

Upcoming Election

The next presidential election is scheduled for October 2026. Should the runoff occur, it will pit the incumbent left-leaning president against the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, framing a contest between Brazil’s established left and a resurgent right-wing faction. The tight margins reported by both Nexus and Datafolha underscore a highly competitive electoral environment as voters finalize their choices.
