Historical Context

The Taiwanese government created Hsinchu Science Park on 15 December 1980, following Shu Shien-Siu’s Silicon-Valley-inspired proposal and Chiang Ching-kuo’s approval. Anchored by TSMC and UMC, the park grew to over 500 high-tech firms, contributing about 10 % of Taiwan’s GDP by 2007. President Lai Ching-te now cites that model for the new Kaohsiung chip complex.
