When Estonia and Latvia entered NATO in March 2004, NATO began the Baltic Air Policing Quick-Reaction-Alert mission, rotating four fighter jets and about 80 support personnel through Šiauliai, Zokniai and later Ämari bases to guard the Baltic airspace.
